Cameron Urges China To Show More Responsibility On Human Rights, Climate Change
Beijing, China (AHN) – British Prime Minister David Cameron ended his two-day visit to China with a challenge for Beijing to show more responsibility in the areas of human rights and climate change.
Cameron pointed out that because of the rise of China as a global power; there is no issue that does not require an input from Beijing.
According to reports, the prime minister also touched on the more sensitive issue of human rights by raising the issue of Nobel winner Liu Xiaobo with Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao in a private conversation. British officials explained Cameron did not speak publicly about human rights to balance the aim of the delegation to increase trade ties between the two nations with Britain’s push for human rights.
Cameron stressed at a Wednesday speech at Beijing University that because of China’s size and influence on the global stage, Beijing must contribute more to various international initiatives such as assistance to Africa, security of shipping lanes and green technology.
Cameron also urged China to spend more and further open its market to help western economies recover from the global financial crisis. He pushed for a more balanced direction of the flow of money and global supply and demand, acknowledging that China managed to enjoy a current account surplus, while Britain is suffering from a budget deficit.
From China, Cameron will proceed to South Korea to attend the G20 meeting.
